Large or small, a sign or banner must grab the
attention of the viewer, often very quickly.
This can be done with the proper fonts, colors,
and design. Understanding how it will be viewed is critical
to making an effective sign.
An outdoor sign must be terse, large, and easy-to-read.
Think about reader boards or billboards:
They often have just a few words.
That is all that can be processed by someone driving by.
Generally, the letters used must be about 1 inch tall
for each 10 feet away the sign will be viewed from.
Color choices should enhance readability, not lessen it.
High contrast color combinations should be used.
For directional signs or wayfinding,
whether indoors or outdoors,
high contrast and solid fonts
should be used.
These signs should have a consistent design
and color scheme to aid with recognition and ease of use.
Inside signage can be more involved, and even closer to a poster style, if needed to get attention and convey more information.
More text and design elements can be used when the viewer is not moving quickly past a sign, though being as concise as possible is generally best.
